This is an Open & Continuous Announcement and will remain open until 9/30/2022 to fill current and future Nursing Assistant vacancies for various shifts in the following areas: inpatient medical-surgical units, critical care units, dialysis, emergency department, manpower pool, primary care and specialty care clinics at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center and Community Outpatient Based Clinics located in Longview, Monroe, and Texarkana. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-03. English Language Proficiency. Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-05 Nursing Assistant (Full Performance Level): Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-04 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs listed below; OR, Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND Demonstrated KSAs: Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-05. Preferred Experience: 1-year previous hospital or long-term care experience Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 pounds and over), Heavy carrying (45 pounds and over, pulling hand over hand (up to 4 hours), pushing (up to 4 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (up to 4 hours), standing (up to 4 hours), crawling (up to 2 hours), kneeling (up to 2 hours), repeated bending (up to 2 hours), climbing, legs only (up to 2 hours), both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid may be permitted). Provide safe, effective care to patients with a wide range of medical conditions. Maintain positive patient/family relationships, which include recognizing and understanding relevant social and spiritual factors.\nDuties include, but are not limited to: Provide patient personal hygiene care by giving assistance with toileting, bathing, hand/fingernail care, foot care, oral hygiene, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves; Applies supportive and protective devices, utilizes principles of good body mechanics when lifting and turning patients, and operates mechanical devices for lifting and/or transferring patients; Performs post-mortem care, carries out safety measures in all patient care activities, including escorting groups and/or individuals to appointments in the hospital; Provides for activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patients as necessary; providing fresh water, ice, and nourishment between meals; ambulating, turning, and positioning patient as needed; Provides patient comfort by utilizing available resources and materials; escorting patients within OBVAMC and to other VA or community facilities for appointments/transfers where indicated; answering patient call lights and requests; reporting observations of the patient to the nursing supervisor; communicating with patients; utilizing de-escalation skills, when needed; Participates in patient groups and activities. Provides constant observation for patients at risk of suicide and close or constant observation for patients that present with high-risk behaviors; Documents actions, observations, and education provided by completing forms, reports, and records in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) for NA care; Maintains work operations by following policies and procedures.
