There Erie VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for one full-time Surgical Technician (ST). The ST is a member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Erie VA Medical Center located on a 20-acre site in an exclusive residential area, overlooking the city and Presque Isle Bay. The Medical Center is a general medical and surgical facility that provides a full range of primary care services. An outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic provides individual and group counseling services, PTSD, substance abuse, suicide prevention, and chronically mental illness treatment. The Medical Center supports a Geriatrics & Extended Care program with Community Living Centers, respite, inpatient hospice, rehabilitation, home based primary care, care coordination home telehealth, geriatric and evaluation management services. Duties and Responsibilities of the Surgical Technician include but are not limited to: Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical and endoscopic procedures such as: urology, ophthalmology, podiatry, a full range of general surgery procedures, a full range of gastrointestinal/endoscopy procedures, ophthalmology and orthopedic surgery Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, battery powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, endoscopic scopes and equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment Assists the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies Handles all specimens appropriately In conjunction with the circulating Registered Nurse, performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy. Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures. Prepares implants, prosthesis and surgical devices during procedures for surgeon use Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new Operating Room staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures Functions as second circulator for complex surgical procedures Provides transportation of patients to and from the Operating Room, as assigned Accounts for the availability of correct implants or prosthetics in the room for procedures, follows established procedures regarding prosthetic tracking. Follows correct site surgery policies and actively participates in surgical time out procedures Assists in the implementation and utilization of surgical department inventory to maintain adequate surgical supplies. This includes but not limited to re-stocking the OR cabinets, specialty carts, and other secondary storage containers. Ensures supplies are monitored for expiration and removed from area if out of date by collaborating with logistics staff on a regular basis Assists the Medical Support Assistant (Surgical Scheduler) and Surgical Administrative Officer to prepare daily surgery schedules, assists with scheduling duties assigned, handles telephone calls, and monitors the OR Front Desk, as assigned. Is able to perform a variety of front desk activities whenever necessary Assists with Nationally required Implant Tracking Mandates related to OR implants Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
