The Medical Director position is located in our Emergency Department, organizationally aligned under the Primary Care Service, at the VA Central California Healthcare System (VACCHCS), Fresno, CA. VACCHCS provides a full range of patient care services, as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, secondary, and long-term care in the areas of primary care, specialty medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care. VACCHCS is affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Fresno Medical Education Program and provides a rich academic environment including postgraduate medical education training for residents and fellows in specialties and sub-specialties.
VACCHCS has an immediate opening for a board eligible/board certified physician in our Emergency Department. The candidate will serve as the Medical Director and will have direct medical staff supervision. The selected candidate will have administrative/ supervisory as well as provide a full range of emergency care in the Emergency Department for Veterans at the VACCHCS main hospital in Fresno, CA. This position plays a vital role in the day to day operations of the Emergency Department. This area of the hospital has a high volume and treats patients that are acutely and critically ill. It is essential that the physicians that work in this area have the appropriate knowledge base and skill set to safely manage our Veteran patients. Physicians in this area should be residency trained in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine,or Family Practice with experience in an Emergency Medicine practice environment. The selected candidate would need to be eligible to be appointed in a faculty position at the level of assistant, associate or full professor in HS clinical series depending on qualification. Applicants should have completed a residency program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or American Osteopathic Association. In addition, it is essential the candidate have teaching experience in the acute and ambulatory setting.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Flexible shift work to include days and nights; some weekend/holiday coverage required (specifics can be discussed during interview or upon selection).

*Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathicmedicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education; or (2)Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation; or (3)For foreign medical graduates, verification with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates that the requirements for certification have been met.
*Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
*Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or American Osteopathic Association; or (2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
